The Truth About Sport Exhaust Systems. Part 1

People are eager to individualize their cars: make them more powerful and aggressive. The fans of high speed are always in need of power increase of the basic engine. When the sources of regulations are drained it is high time for forcing – a creative thus costly process.
We've all heard about so-called sport exhaust systems. So let's clear up some info about them.
Cans
A number of manufacturers produce so-called “unoriginal” parts, including tuning (or sport) parts. These companies are really multiple. The most frequent are ASSO, Blitz, HKS, Powerful, Remus, Sebrin, Walker, Ulfer etc.
The majority of tuning silencers are universal. They can be adjusted to each and every car of the appropriate class. The problems can only emerge if the part is too big for the car, but the case are quite rare.
The owner is to determine his preferences – if he wants blued steel, nickel or dim white metal, one or two run-outs, straight or upturned pipes. And, of course, the sound.
Keep in mind: when the silencer works for a while the timbre and key of its sound will slightly change. A number of sites feature sounds of silencers, listen to them and choose the ones you like.
The price depends on the material quality, technology and the brand.
Spiders
The major part of power losses are due in the exhaust collector. In tuning and sport the basic collector is replaced by a so-called spider – the device is different in shape and the order of linking pipes with exhaust windows.
Spiders can be “long” and “short”. If we take, for instance, a 4-cylinder engine, a long spider scheme will be 4->2->1 and the short one – 4->1. A long spider features a linking muff 2->1, and a short one has a more complicated geometry. A short spider is more often used for sport cars. Long spiders are better for amateur tuning as they enable power and torque increase. The physics of the devices are quite complicated so we won’t feed you to the details. And the only question we will answer is “what is the power increase?” The max power increase is around 7%. The direct-flow exhaust system uses wide pipes and low-resistance resonators. Instead of firm connections bumps are used, the latter are quite short-lived.
All these elements are not difficult to install yourself. But, of course, it is much more preferable to visit auto service: comparing to the price of the parts the price of the service is quite reasonable, moreover, the installation process requires some special equipment.
